The role of punishment in the works of Adam Smith
2009
The reformation of criminal justice is one of the great themes in Enlightenment culture and concerned its main exponents from Montesquieu to Beccaria, Filangieri, Bentham. One of the traits of greater modernity in the theories worked out by juridical Enlightenment is the resort to the utilitarianinspired economic analysis. Adam Smith doesn't back out of this scientific and civil commitment, but his doctrine appears significantly different though contemporary to juridical Enlightenment, and is also based on economic argumentations. In this work we will look through the main writings which contain the Smithian thought in search of those parts dealing with the theme of punishment and its socia…
From lab to industry: Scaling up green geopolymeric mortars manufacturing towards circular economy
2021
Abstract Construction is nowadays considered an extremely energy intensive industry and one of the main sources of environmental pollution in the world. Therefore, the research and the development of novel energy-saving manufacturing processes and sustainable construction materials is more than ever urgent and challenging. This paper aims at identifying the industrial process for the production of novel geopolymers to be used as a greener substitute for cement, especially the Portland one, widely used for structural applications to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry. Here, the materials sustainability and the manufacturing process are improved by valo…
Fuzzy economic spaces
1980
Traditional spatial economic analysis is limited to the description of precise spaces. To say that an economic space is precise means: (1) that this space has, or else, has not given constituent characteristics and (2) that the agents located there prefer, or else, do not prefer one possible action to another. Proposition (1) implies that an economic space is perfectly delimited and that it can be clearly partitioned into homogeneous subspaces. Proposition (2) implies that economic agents undertake exact economic calculations and optimize, under rigid constraints of resource limitation, objective functions whose arguments are clearly defined. Thus, traditional spatial economic analysis is b…
Recupero sostenibile nel centro storico di Petralia Soprana: strategie per il retrofit energetico.
2013
The valorization of building in the historical centers of limited territorial environment, such as the ones in the Madonie’s Park, represents a requirement of mountain communities, which are the witnesses of a gradual abandonment of historical buildings, representative of the local cultural heritage, mainly because they are inadequate to ensure indoor comfort. Also for the recovery of these buildings, technological, energy and economic issues have to be evaluated, compatibly with the historical value. In particular this urban area, typical of the Madonie’s Park, is an architectural, historical and material heritage that merges with the natural and scenic values of the area, representing the…
Analysis of the Economic Potential Trough Biochar Use for Soybean Production in Poland
2021
Soybean (Glycine max L.) is one of the most important crops grown globally. Biochar has been proposed as an alternative to aid sustainable soybean production. However, comprehensive studies that include both the economic aspects of soybean production and biochar are scarce. Poland, with an economy largely based on agriculture, is an interesting case to investigate the cost-effectiveness of using biochar in soybean production. We show that the use of biochar at rates of 40, 60 and 80 t/ha is unprofitable compared with a traditional soil amendment, such as NPK fertilization. The breakeven price for biochar to be economically viable should be USD 39.22, USD 38.29 and USD 23.53 for 40, 60 and 8…
Exergy recovery in regasification facilities – Cold utilization: A modular unit
2009
Abstract The paper deals with the problem of cold recovery for direct utilization both in the site of regasification facility and far from it. A modular LNG regasification unit is proposed having the regasification capacity of 2 billion standard cubic meters/year of gas. The modular plant is based on use of a power cycle working with ethane or ethylene which allows operation of cold energy transfer, contained in LNG to be regasified, in a range of temperatures suitable for multipurpose use of cold, reducing regasification process irreversibility. Some electric energy is produced by the power cycle, but the own mission of modular unit proposed is addressed to deliver cold suitable for indust…
Economic Benefits of Waste Pickling Solution Valorization
2022
An integrated hybrid membrane process, composed of a diffusion dialysis (DD), a membrane distillation (MD) and a reactive precipitation unit (CSTR), is proposed as a promising solution for the valorization and onsite recycling of pickling waste streams. An economic analysis was performed aiming to demonstrate the feasibility of the developed process with a NPV of about EUR 40,000 and a DPBP of 4 years. The investment and operating costs, as well as the avoided costs and the benefits for the company operating the plant, were analyzed with an extensive cost tracking exercise and through face-to-face contact with manufacturers and sector leaders. A mathematical model was implemented using the …
Highly purified chondroitin sulfate: a literature review on clinical efficacy and pharmacoeconomic aspects in osteoarthritis treatment
2020
AbstractOsteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent musculoskeletal disease and a major cause of negative relevant outcomes, associated with an ever-increasing societal burden. Pharmaceutical-grade chondroitin sulfate (CS) was repeatedly reported to reduce pain and improve function in patients with OA. This article aims to review the evidence for the role of highly purified (hp) CS (Condrosulf®, IBSA) in the treatment of OA. We collected and reported evidence concerning (1) efficacy of hpCS 800 mg/day in the treatment of OA affecting the knee, hand and hip; (2) efficacy and safety of hpCS 1200 mg/day also in the oral gel formulation; (3) the safety profile of hpCS; (4) the difference of hpCS …

Il marginalismo giuridico di Gaetano Filangieri
2009
This work aims at presenting the elements of marginalist analysis which occur in the thought of Gaetano Filangieri. In the pages of La Scienza della Legislazione the Neapolitan writer shows the tendency to develop a utilitarian investigation which pays attention to the judgements individuals make over social phenomena at the margin point. A proof of this tendency can be found in the explanation of the principle of decreasing marginal utility, argued in Head XXXI of Book III, which represents one of the most effective demonstrations that can be found before the end of XIX century literature. The most remarkably original fact is that, of all the five parts which compose the Filangierian work,…
